Off the Mexican coast - 18 April

It’s been a great 24 hours. Yesterday morning was a very busy watch and I did various jobs on the boat, which makes it all the more interesting, you're not just stuck with something boring and get to do the fun things. Boring is cleaning out the bilges. Fun is helming, especially when there's a nice breeze and you are surfing the slight waves at mainly 11 - 13 knots, with a top speed of 14.2, as occurred in the late evening yesterday, after a beautiful warm sunny day. The night was still quite chilly, but each night I have fewer layers on. I've also been in the snake pit, while we gybed with the kite up and am gradually getting to grips with the procedure. I like the snake pit. It appeals to my OCD tendencies.

We haven't seen a lot of wild life, but there have been a couple of pods of dolphins and one turtle floated by. It didn't look too well so I hope it was just asleep.

We're all gradually gelling and getting on well and I think we're well positioned in the race.

I had trouble sleeping to start with but hopefully my body is now getting accustomed to the watch rota. As we have 18 crew, one person is without a bunk. I drew the short straw and so I am the roving bunker. However it's working out better than I feared and I am reasonably comfortable hot bunking between two of the lower bunks.
